BIOLOGY
Crangon is a cold-water shrimp. It is found in mainly shallow water around the British coast. It grows to about 8cm and can live for 3-4 years.
|
STOCK OR FISHERY DETAIL
No assessment of stocks by ICES in North East Atlantic. It is a non-pressure or unprotected species i.e. not subject to quota restrictions.
No assessment of stocks by ICES |
STOCK INFORMATION
There is no international or national assessment of shrimp stocks, only ad hoc investigations to evaluate the interaction between shrimp fisheries and the environment. Natural predation is responsible for as much shrimp mortality as fishing pressure. Shrimp fisheries have high recoverability and low vulnerability to fisheries exploitation due to rapid maturation. The North Sea Brown Shrimp Fishery is currently being assessed as an environmentally responsible fishery against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Standard.
|
CAPTURE OR FARMING INFORMATION
Beam trawling is a fishing method associated with damage to the seabed and discarding of immature fish. Veil nets and separators are sometimes fitted to beam trawls (often on a voluntary basis) to exclude juvenile fish, such as plaice and sole from the shrimp catch.
|
ADVICE
The best choice to make in terms of sustainability and selectivity is to choose brown shrimp caught in trawls fitted with veil nets and separators, which reduce by-catch of non-target and juvenile fish and shrimp. Avoid eating shrimp during peak breeding periods, April to September and October/November.
