ADVICE
The stock in the Eastern Channel is classified as 'having full reproductive capacity' or healthy but at risk of being harvested unsustainably i.e. fishing pressure is higher than the maximum level recommended by ICES. To increase the sustainability of the fish you eat from this area choose sole from the Hastings Fleet trammel net or trawl fisheries which are certified as an environmentally responsible by the Marine Stewardship Council. Avoid eating immature sole (less than 28cm) and fresh (not previously frozen) fish caught during the breeding season (April-June).

The following is a list of fish available to the UK and European consumer which have been given a rating of 1 or 2 and which MCS believes are fished within sustainable levels using methods which do not cause unacceptable damage to the environment or non-target species. The list is in alphabetical order not in order of sustainability. (download the MCS Pocket Good Fish Guide (Adobe PDF)) |
